What is wellness?
Lately, life is filled with so much stress and uncertainty that it can be challenging for anyone to cope with it all. Therefore, taking the time to understand and cultivate personal mental health is now more important than ever.
One key way to improve personal mental health is through the practice of wellness. Wellness is the active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life. These wellness practices don’t have to be dramatic changes. With busy lives and packed schedules, try the SIMPLE method to establish wellness in your own life!
Learn something new
Spending time with friends, family, and loved ones is a great mood booster and can lead to longer, happier lives! Take time each day to connect with others–sit down for dinner with family, go on a walk with a friend, join a virtual work happy hour, or volunteer your time to help others.
If you can’t meet in person, there are still a number of ways to stay connected via technology–try a phone call, facetime, or having a virtual watch party on your favorite streaming service.
Getting the proper amount of sleep each night is a great way to improve physical and mental wellbeing. Everyone’s sleep needs are different but getting at least 7 hours per night is recommended. If you’re struggling to fall asleep at night, try limiting your screen time before bed and minimizing naps throughout the day. Mindfulness is the process of becoming more actively engaged in our daily lives. While working at home, days can tend to blend together. Try to take a moment to find novelty in daily life– enjoy a new flavor of coffee, listen to a short Headspace video, start a gratitude journal, or try actively creating one moment to savor each day.
Staying active is one of the most beneficial things we can do to improve our health. If you are looking to really sweat, try HIIT workouts. If you want a more lowkey workout experience, go for a walk or center yourself with yoga and stretching.
