Have you ever had to scroll past hundreds of emails in your inbox to specifically find one your boss sent you just last week? Frantically tried to find the Zoom link to a meeting scheduled to begin in two minutes? Or maybe you’re running out of storage space on your computer and you have no idea what’s causing it? If you answered yes to either of these questions, it’s time to declutter your inbox and virtual working space! And there’s no better time than during National Simply Your Life Week which is the first week of August.A few things to think about before beginning this decluttering journey… Would you rather have a system sort through everything for you? Or would you rather take the time to personalize your organization in a way that makes it meant just for you? Either way, here’s some tips and tricks to guide you through:
Mailstrom has been proven to efficiently delete and unsubscribe to emails from Outlook. Unroll.me and Unlistr are other great programs that can unsubscribe you from dozens of spam emails in seconds. Another great resource is SyncGene which gives users the ability to sync up to 5 sources (calendars, contacts, tasks, etc.) and it updates every 30 minutes across all platforms.
Organizing your inbox
This task can be a pain. Especially when you don’t take action (reply, forward, delete) immediately after opening an email. Otherwise, the emails will begin to take up unnecessary space. If you’d like to personalize your inbox to what works for you, here’s how. Collecting all emails from previous years/months and organizing them into folders has been made easy thanks to this how-to. Another tip is to search for ‘unsubscribe’ in your inbox and it will help identify all the emails you have received that have the option to unsubscribe and haven’t been catching your attention recently. Once it’s uncluttered, keep it uncluttered! Deleting or archiving emails once you’ve responded to them will help you feel more accomplished for taking initiative with them immediately.
Keeping your virtual space organized
Now that the transition from working in an office to working at home has become normalized, it’s critical to keep your virtual space organized – just as if you were to keep your office desk that way. The more we use virtual spaces, the more virtual clutter we begin to accumulate. Here are some tips and tricks to maximize your work from home efficiency:
Create folders on your desktop.
Don’t let a good wallpaper go to waste if it’s covered up by all the files on your desktop!
Clear out downloads folder/Uninstall unwanted apps/programs.
Use a tool called “Duplicate File Fixer” to clear out any duplicate downloads taking up unnecessary space.
Clear out ‘Notes’ on phone/desktop.
This application could be holding onto old passwords, addresses, and other little things that you don’t use/need anymore.
Unfollowing accounts on social media you don’t engage with anymore.
If you don’t interact/find certain content interesting anymore, save your time and attention for something that is better suited for you and your goals! Turn off email notifications from any other outside apps/social media – you can check each social media account as you normally would without getting extra emails!
