Whether you’re looking to keep busy while in quarantine or looking to imitate your regular gym workout at home, we’re here to help! It doesn’t matter how much equipment or experience you have, the most important thing to focus on is moving your body and knowing your limits. Exercise has so many health benefits and is a great habit to start.
Warming up is just as important at the gym as it is in your own home. This can be done with simple heart raising activities such as jogging or marching in place, jumping jacks, light stretching and jumping rope. The goal is to increase your heart rate and blood flow and shouldn’t take any more than 10 minutes.
Compared to running on a treadmill, running outside is a great change of scenery and an extra challenge. Going outside for a jog has been proven to boost your mood, allows you to explore new places and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine! While treadmill running is a great training tool for learning your pace and distance limits with the added convenience of not having to worry about weather, outdoor running activates more muscles and overall, more beneficial.
If you prefer to have a structured planned workout, there are some great apps on the market that can help! Just to name a few, “Nike Training Club” “Peloton” “Fitplan” and “Gymshark” along with countless others are available for download on your phone. These apps allow you to select a plan and begin following training videos and detailed instructions that will walk you through a workout.
Replacing Weights with Household Items
There are quite a few places to order weights online and have them delivered. To save time and money, there are everyday items that can double as workout equipment. A milk jug, canned goods, a bag of apples, laundry detergent or even wine bottles can all be used as makeshift weights. Most of the items will also allow you the increase or decrease the weight depending on your ability.
The overall goal of a cool down is to bring down your heart rate, cool your body temperature and relax the muscles. This is a good time to reflect on your workout and appreciate the amazing things you’re able to do with your body. During this reflection, notice what struggles you faced throughout your workout and how you overcame them. Set realistic goals for your next workout and be thankful and appreciate the healthy body that you have.
